Buckeyes Reach Into 'The State Up North' to Land Huge 2014 Commitment

Ohio State hosted a number of touted junior prospects on unofficial visits this weekend, which was capped by their attendance of the Buckeyes' win over Michigan on the basketball court on Sunday. For Ohio State, it would turn out to be the first of two victories over Michigan on the day.

One of those talented juniors in attendance was cornerback Damon Webb (5-11 180) out of Cass Tech in Detroit, who saw enough on his visit to make the decision to become Ohio State's second verbal commitment for the 2014 class.

Webb joins Glenville offensive lineman Marcelys Jones, giving the Buckeyes a commitment from their own pipeline, as well as Michigan's in the class of 2014. The Wolverines signed a total of three players from Cass Tech in the 2011 and 2012 classes, and currently have three commits from the school in the 2013 class alone.

Webb broke the good news for Buckeye fans via Twitter, tweeting, "I'm proud to be a Ohio State Buckeye #Committed".

Webb, who you can see here locking down 247 Sports' #1 receiver in the 2013 class Laquon Treadwell, committed to Ohio State over offers from Michigan, Michigan State, LSU, Mississippi State, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Webb is rated a four-star prospect by Rivals, Scout and 247 Sports, and is also on ESPN's 2014 Watch List. Scout has Webb ranked as the #7 corner in the nation and 33rd-ranked player overall, while 247 ranks him as the #11 corner and the 146th-ranked player in the nation.

A commitment wasn't necessarily in the plans for Webb this soon, but the draw of Ohio State and everything that the school had to offer was just too strong for the junior.

"Many things," Webb's father, Damon Sr., told the-Ozone when explaining why his son chose Ohio State.

"Great school, great tradition, great academics, strong relationship with coach (Kerry) Coombs that goes back to camps. It just all felt right and Damon told me and his mother that this was the place for him. We sat down and told Urban Meyer our desire to commit and he was very excited about it."

"Coach Coombs came to visit me at Cass every month," Webb the Younger told Scout.com.

"I felt he was very high on me. All the words he said to me were sincere and Coach Meyer made me feel at home. When I was at the visit, I went over what Coach Coombs sees me at, and I think I can definitely play right away."

According to 247 Sports, Webb recorded seven interceptions and four forced fumbles this past season, as well as 42 tackles.

At the Sound Mind Sound Body Maximum Exposure Adidas Winter Showcase last month in Pontiac, Michigan, Webb was named the overall MVP of the receivers and defensive backs, continuing his excellent performances in camp settings.

But with nearly 13 months until Webb needs to sign his Letter of Intent, this recruitment appears far from over. Unless you ask Webb himself.

"Done deal," he told Scout, attempting to remove any such doubts.

Webb isn't the only cornerback the Buckeyes are in on for the 2014 class. Five-star prospect Tony Brown out of Beaumont, Texas plans to visit Ohio State in the summer. Much like with Webb, Coombs appears to be a factor here as well.

There is also five-star Jabrill Peppers from Ramsey, New Jersey, who has stated that he has a top two of Ohio State and Stanford. He was named a First Team All-American by the USA Today this season.

More names will emerge, but that should give you a pretty good indication of the type of talent that is already in the works for the 2014 class.
