Recruiting Updates: Trey Johnson Re-Affirms OSU Commitment; Dontre Wilson "50/50"; Ezekiel Elliott Quiet
By Tony Gerdeman
With just over a week until Signing Day recruiting news will be happening fast and furious until all of the signatures are dry. Monday evening was indicative of that with a number items that we wanted to update you on.
Four-star linebacker Trey Johnson, out of Lawrenceville, Georgia, re-affirmed his commitment to Ohio State on Monday, after taking an official visit to Tennessee this past weekend.
The visit, which had two entire fanbases in a buzz, saw Johnson essentially sneak off to Knoxville for a weekend visit. Buckeye fans (and likely coaches) were justifiably worried about a possible decommitment. After all, it wouldn't be the first time Johnson decommitted from a school, having done the same to Auburn prior to committing to the Buckeyes.
However, with a text to Mike Farrell at Rivals Monday evening, Johnson's coach stated that the nation's #2 inside linebacker (per ESPN) would be signing with Ohio State.
The news was welcome relief for a fanbase still waiting to find out where St. Louis running back Ezekiel Elliott stands following his official visit to Missouri. Elliott denied interview requests, though his father said the visit went well.
Ohio State coaches Tom Herman and Stan Drayton were slated to visit with Elliott on Monday, no doubt to try and take some of the shine off of his visit to Missouri. Obviously, Ohio State would have preferred that Elliott re-affirmed his commitment to the Buckeyes much like Johnson did, but that doesn't appear to have happened yet. There should be something on this one way or the other very soon.
Following the visit of Dontre Wilson, a four-star running back/slot receiver out of DeSoto, Texas, 247 Sports reported that the current Oregon commit is "50/50" between Oregon and Ohio State. That number came from Wilson's father.
As with the Elliott situation, news could break on this one at any moment as well.
Receiver James Clark out of New Smyrna Beach, Florida still has his unofficial visit to Florida this coming weekend. He is planning on making his decision known on Signing Day, so there may not be any real news as it concerns Clark until the weekend is over.
Dan Skipper, the 6-10 offensive tackle out of Colorado, committed to Arkansas on Monday, meaning Ohio State is basically down to one offensive lineman on their recruiting board in Cameron Hunt.
Hunt, out of Corona, California, is currently committed to Cal, but has a top three of the Golden Bears, Ohio State and Oregon. He plans on making a Signing Day announcement.
Five-star safety Vonn Bell, out of Rossville, Georgia, is still planning on deciding between Tennessee, Alabama and Ohio State. There were some Twitter rumors Monday evening that had Bell trending Tennessee's way. Bell officially visited the Vols this past weekend. He will make his decision on Signing Day live on ESPNU at 10 a.m.
Frankfort, Kentucky running back/receiver Ryan Timmons finally received an Ohio State offer last week, but he won't be taking any further visits to OSU. Urban Meyer is scheduled to make an in-home visit this week, however. Currently, KSTV is reporting that Timmons will be making his decision known at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. His desire to play running back at the next level might make Ohio State the odd man out here.
