Gone Too Soon: RIP Brent Darby (1981-2011)
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ozone has received the sad word that former Ohio State basketball player Brent Darby has passed away at the young age of 30. The exact details of his death are not yet known, but his untimely passing should serve as a reminder for us all about the fragility of life.

Darby was an exciting guard for the Buckeyes from 1999-2003, but he will be remembered as much for his smile and bright personality as he will for the game of basketball.

A native of River Rouge, Mich., Darby was selected as the Jerry Lucas Most Valuable Player during his senior season at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes in games started (32), minutes played (1,219), field goals (163), free throws made (205) and attempted (253), assists (141) and steals (58), while averaging over 18 points per game.

The teams Darby played on at Ohio State weren’t nearly as talented as the one that went to the NCAA Final Four in 1999, but Darby single-handedly carried them in the post-season his senior year.

The 6-1 guard averaged over 21 points per game during the Big Ten Tournament, and helped the 8th-place Buckeyes reach the conference title game, where they eventually fell to Illinois. He also scored 35 points in Ohio State’s loss to Duke in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

In four seasons as a Buckeye, Darby was part of three NCAA tournament teams, two co-Big Ten regular season titles, a postseason league tournament title and four-consecutive trips to postseason tournaments.

He would go on to play professionally in Poland, Israel, Italy and France.

We will have further details as they are made available.
