No. 2 Buckeyes Drub Tennessee Martin to Complete Undefeated Non-Conference Schedule.
By John Porentas
No. 2 Ohio State (13-0) completed an undefeated non-conference schedule with a 100-40 drubbing of outclassed Tennessee Martin (4-9).
Buckeye guard William Buford set the tone by scoring seven points in the first 63 seconds to stake OSU to a 7-0 lead. OSU's opening salvo eventually reached 18-2 just over six minutes into the game. From there on, it only got worse for Tennessee Martin.
The Buckeyes led 49-17 at the half, then opened the second half with an 18-0 run to take a 67-17 lead. OSU went on to build a lead of 63 points shortly before the game ended.
"Our team had a great intensity about them," said an obviously pleased Thad Matta.
The Buckeyes dominated in every statistic including a 49-28 rebounding advantage. OSU shot 58.6 percent from the field while holding Tennessee Martin to an anemic 27 percent.
Five OSU players scored in double figures including Buford with a game-high 23. Freshman Deshaun Thomas added 20 off the bench, and freshman center Jared Sullinger added 18 while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Other double-digit scorers included seniors David Lighty and Dallas Lauderdale with 10 apiece.
"We had good energy. I thought guys did a good job of sharing the basketball," said Matta.
OSU registered 26 assists while turning the ball over just nine times.
Matta was able to play 10 players, nine of whom logged double-digit minutes. Every Buckeyes who saw action scored.
"We're glad to go 13-0 in the non-conference. Now we want to stay hungry and get ready for the Big Ten season," said Buford, who despite the lopsided win still saw room for improvement.
"I think we can still get a lot better in every aspect of our game," Buford said.
Tennessee Martin had one double-digit scorer. Guard Ruben Clayton came off the bench to lead his team with 13 points. Skyhawk Head Coach Jason James was impressed with the Buckeyes.
"I thought we'd play a little better," said James.
"They're as good as they get in the whole country. I thought we'd come out and compete a little better. I don't think you every come out and expect to get beat by 60. I didn't think it would be as bad a it was."
