Defensive linemen John Simon and Johnathan Hankins were named to the 2012 Bednarik Award watch list Monday, while quarterback Braxton Miller was named to the 2012 Maxwell Award watch list.
The Bednarik Award is given to the top defensive player in college football while the Maxwell Award is given to the sport’s best overall player.
Simon, who will likely be a captain under first-year coach Urban Meyer, was an Associated Press third-team All-American last season and has already been named to the LOTT Impact Award watch list.
The senior led the Buckeyes last season with seven sacks last season and chewed out backfields for 16 tackles-for-loss.

Hankins—affectionately known by OSU fans as “Big Hank”—made 67 tackles in OSU’s 2011 campaign and has played in all 26 games in the past two years including 13 starts last season as just a sophomore.
With only one season under his belt, Miller enters his sophomore year as the Buckeyes’ signal caller as one of three Big Ten quarterbacks named to the Maxwell Award watch list including Iowa’s James Vandenberg and Michigan’s Denard Robinson.
In his freshman season at OSU, Miller threw for 1,159 yards and 13 touchdowns compared to four interceptions. Additionally, Miller amassed—and led the Buckeyes—with 715 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
