Memorializing the Late Jason Winrow

By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A memorial service for Ohio State graduate and former OSU football player Jason Winrow will be held this Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Fawcett Center in Columbus.

The service for Winrow, who died Sunday at his home in Westerville, Ohio, at the age of 41, will start at 4 p.m. on Thursday at 2400 Olentangy River Road, just north of the Schottenstein Center.

A native of Bridgeton, N.J., Winrow was a three-year starter as a tackle and guard for the Buckeyes under coach John Cooper from 1991-93. He was a first-team all-Big Ten Conference guard in 1993 and was drafted in the sixth round of the 1994 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.

Winrow, who had become a bit of a cult hero as a larger-than-life media personality in Columbus, graduated in March of this year with his degree in economics. He came back to school through the Ohio State athletic department’s Degree Completion Program.

He was a fun-loving spirit who truly did bless the lives of those who knew him. I can personally attest to that from my limited exposure to Jason’s boisterous laugh as we cracked jokes back and forth on the set of 10TV’s Wall to Wall Sports.

Winrow wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, whether he was on the air or simply carrying on a private conversation, but there was rarely a topic he could not speak intelligently on. He was one of those guys who was just a pleasure to be around and it’s truly hard to believe he’s gone.

A fund has been set up to help Winrow’s widow (Nancy) and three children. Those wishing to donate to the Jason Winrow Memorial Fund can do so at any Chase Bank branch location or by mailing:
