Buckeyes Finalize 2013 Schedule with San Diego State
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State football team has finalized its 2013 schedule, the University announced Friday. The Buckeye have added a home game on Sept. 7 against San Diego State University, which fills the void on their nonconference schedule that was left when Vanderbilt backed out of it’s scheduled game in Columbus.
Ohio State’s schedule had to be re-worked to accommodate a new opponent, but the Buckeyes were able to secure an all-important seventh home game for the 2013 season.
“San Diego State has a fine football program and we are happy to be able to add them to our schedule,” Ohio State director of athletics Gene Smith said in a statement.
“We have had an excellent relationship with SDSU over the years with three exciting, competitive games since 2001.”
The Aztecs are currently 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in the Mountain West with a game at Boise State this weekend. They are coming off an 8-win season a year ago and an appearance in the New Orleans Bowl.
Next year, both San Diego State and Boise State will become members of the Big East Conference.
“The momentum of qualifying for a record third consecutive bowl game as well as moving into one of the top-five conferences in the country will carry the Aztecs' program into arguably the most exciting year of football in San Diego State history,” San Diego State director of athletics Jim Sterk said Friday.
“It was fortunate to have a game with a high-quality opponent like Ohio State available at this late date.”
Ohio State has won the three previous meetings between the teams (all in Ohio Stadium): 27-12 in 2001; 16-13 in 2003; and 27-6 in 2005.

The order of the 2013 non-conference home games had to be altered during the process of scheduling the Aztecs, and so game dates with Florida A&M and Buffalo were changed.
“We are very appreciative that Buffalo and Florida A&M had some flexibility and were open to changing game dates,” Smith added in his statement.
The Sept. 7 game against Florida A&M will now be played Sept. 21, and the initially scheduled Sept. 21 game vs. Buffalo will now be the season opener on Aug. 31.
