Two-Minute Drill: Fickell Runs Intense Scrimmage

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Saturday marked one of the biggest days of fall camp for Ohio State as they held their offense vs. defense jersey scrimmage.

One big change from Jim Tressel’s jersey scrimmages was the fact Luke Fickell opted not to keep score Saturday. He thought that would create a more intense scrimmage, and the players agreed.

Here is your two-minute drill from Saturday’s scrimmage:

• Had they kept score using Tressel’s formula, the offense would have been victorious, primarily because the defense forced only one turnover. Cornerback Travis Howard picked off Joe Bauserman on a pass to Corey “Philly” Brown in the end zone.

• Bauserman took most of the snaps with the first-team offense (close to 75 percent), while Braxton Miller worked primarily with the twos. They combined for a total of three touchdowns while kicker Drew Basil was 5-6 on field goal attempts.

• Offensive Coordinator Jim Bollman said they are preparing two quarterbacks to play. Kenny Guiton isn’t completely out of it yet, but they will have to get down to two by next week.

• Bauserman and Miller were both hot and cold throwing the ball Saturday. Bauserman completed the best pass of the day, a perfectly thrown ball down the left sideline to Devin Smith. It went for 55 yards, but Smith was hauled down at the five-yard line by cornerback Doran Grant, who had gotten beat in coverage.

• Unofficially, Bauserman finished the day 7-of-13 passing for 120 yards (55 on one play) and a 10-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end Jeff Heuerman.

• Braxton Miller threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to Chris Fields and another to Evan Spencer. The toss to Fields was underthrown, but he came back for the ball, making the catch in front of C.J. Barnett and Christian Bryant, before sprinting to the end zone.

• Unofficially, Miller was 9-17 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns. He also looked impressive running the ball. Guiton was 4-10 passing for 29 yards and Taylor Graham was 3-4 for 25 yards as they alternated with the third-team offense.

• Players who missed the scrimmage because of injury included DeVier Posey, Jaamal Berry, Reid Fragel, Tyler Moeller, Solomon Thomas, Jeremy Cash and Chad Hagan. Senior Nathan Williams was back out there on a limited basis after missing practice this week.

• Injured linebacker Connor Crowell also joined the Buckeyes, wearing crutches on the sideline. Fellow freshman Chase Farris joined him after hobbling off with a knee injury.

• None of the running backs broke any big runs, but Carlos Hyde seemed to hit the hole with the most force. He was stuffed in short-yardage a few times with the second-team, but only because the offensive line got pushed back.

• Some players who stood on the defense were Andrew Sweat, Christian Bryant, Johnathan Hankins, John Simon, Ryan Shazier, Darryl Baldwin, Michael Bennett and Steve Miller.

• Massive freshman Chris Carter had a tough time in pass protection. He got beat a few times by Miller and Baldwin and eventually resorted to some serious holding.
