It’s Official: Hall will Redshirt
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — The No. 2 Buckeyes have one of their deepest and most experienced offensive lines in years, but they will have to play the 2010 season without a key member of that offensive front.

Ohio State announced Friday that sophomore offensive tackle Marcus Hall will redshirt the entire 2010 football season for academic reasons.

“Due to the fact that I didn’t satisfactorily complete my academic responsibilities, I will be redshirting during the 2010 season,” Hall said in a statement released by the university.

“I’m looking at this in a positive way – as an opportunity to get better on and off the field, to get stronger in the classroom, and be better prepared all-around for the rest of my time at Ohio State.”

Although he was not expected to start for the Buckeyes in 2010, Hall is a promising young offensive lineman out of Cleveland Glenville who played in nine games last season as a true freshman at Ohio State. He even started one game at right tackle against Iowa when starter J.B. Shugarts was out with an injury.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder was pushing Shugarts as the backup right tackle in spring, but asked the coaching staff to move over to the left tackle spot this fall to compete with Mike Adams and Andrew Miller.

He had seen some reps as the second-team left tackle during fall camp before rumors started to speculate last weekend that he might not be in good academic standing heading into the start of fall quarter at Ohio State. A university spokesperson confirmed during the week that a redshirt was being considered for Hall, who was demoted to the third string left tackle in practice.

This is hardly the first time that Glenville products have had issues with academics at Ohio State. The Buckeyes recently lost running back Jermil Martin, a former high school teammate of Hall’s, to academics. In January, two former Glenville players—Ray Small and Rob Rose—were suspended for Ohio State’s matchup with Oregon in the Rose.

Hall doesn’t plan of ending up with the same fate as Martin, however, as he vowed to get himself back on the field next season.

“I will still be practicing every day, not just to help myself get better, but to help my teammates get better,” he said.

Hall would be a redshirt sophomore in 2011, giving him three more years of eligibility. It could end up helping him in the long run, because both Shugarts and Adams will be seniors next season.

With Hall out of the mix, it leaves a two-person race between Adams and Miller for the starting left tackle spot. It also leaves them a little thin at right tackle, where true freshman Andrew Norwell is now running with the twos.
