Division Alignment Yields Interesting and Challenging Schedule in 2011

By John Porentas

The alignment issue is settled. That means that the Big Ten could move on to the next step of actually creating a schedule for 2011 and 2012.

The Big Ten will implement an eight-game league schedule in 2011 and 2012 before looking at going to a nine-game league schedule, perhaps as soon as 2013.

The six-team division set up will require that the teams within a division will play every year. Additionally, every team will have a protected, inter-division rivalry game which will be played every season as well. For OSU, that game will be Michigan in the last game of the season. Each team will also play a two-year, home and home series with two other inter-divisional opponents.

Contrary to some earlier reports, inter-divisional games will count toward determining divisional standings.

The Buckeyes will open the 2011 season with a couple of in-state rival games, squaring off against Akron and Toledo at Ohio Stadium before traveling to Miami for their return match against the Hurricanes. They will then follow up with a home game against new PAC-10 member Colorado.

The Big Ten schedule will include games with OSU's five in-division foes - Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Purdue, - the protected inter-division game with Michigan to end the season, and inter-division games at home against Michigan State and on the road against Nebraska. The trip to Lincoln will be for the Husker's first home game as a Big Ten member.

In 2012, the Huskers will play in Ohio Stadium and OSU will travel to East Lansing. The Buckeyes also have a game against the University of California in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The location of that game has not yet been announced.
