Buckeyes Blow Leads, Lose Weekend Series to Hoosiers 2-1

Ohio State hit the road for their second Big Ten series of the season but fell short on the defensive side of things, losing the weekend set 2-1 to Indiana.

The series dropped the Buckeyes to 11-14 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten.

Game One

Starting pitcher Drew Rucinski set the tone for the Buckeyes, throwing 7.0 strong innings, giving up seven hits and just one unearned run enroute to a 6-2 Ohio State win.

He struck out five in the process, and moved his record to 3-1 on the season.

Ohio State led 2-1 going into the seventh inning when they began to break it open a bit. Greg Solomon scored on a Brad Hutton single, and pinch-runner Joe Ciamacco (who replaced Hutton) later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Engle.

The eighth inning saw the Buckeyes score a run without even getting a hit. Tim Wetzel was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a balk, then advanced to third and then scored on consecutive flyouts. Solomon then followed that up with a double and scored on a David Corna single.

Reliever Andrew Armstrong pitched two scoreless innings of relief to close it out for the Buckeyes.

Solomon went 2-3 with an RBI and scored two runs.

The Hoosiers scored five runs in the first three innings then held on for a 5-3 win as starting pitcher Chad Martin pitched eight solid innings while scattering eight hits.

Buckeye starter Brett McKinney went 5.2 and gave up eight hits and four earned runs. The loss makes him 1-2 on the season.

Indiana scored a run in the first, but the Buckeyes quickly answered with three runs of their own in the second inning. Greg Solomon got the inning started by getting hit by a pitch and would eventually come around to score thanks to singles by Brad Hallberg and Matt Streng.

Hallberg would score on an Engle sacrifice bunt, and Streng would come around to score on a Brian DeLucia single to centerfield, making it 3-1 Buckeyes. 

The Hoosiers would score three of their own in the bottom half of the inning, and then add an insurance run in the third.

DeLucia, Wetzel and Streng had six of the Buckeyes' eight hits on the day.

A Sunday afternoon with the wind blowing out generally means that there are going to be some runs scored, and the rubber match of this series was no exception as Indiana scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 10-9 victory over the Buckeyes.

The game featured seven extra-base hits, and every Hoosier starter had at least one base hit.

The Buckeyes led 3-2 heading into the fourth inning when they seemingly blew things open with a four-run inning. Matt Streng led off with a double, which was then followed by a Tyler Engle walk. A Brian DeLucia walk loaded the bases before Tim Wetzel brought Streng and Engle home with a single.

DeLucia would score on an error, and Wetzel came home on a Josh Dezse sacrifice fly to end the scoring.

Ohio State added an eighth run in the sixth, giving them an 8-2 lead before the Hoosiers began fighting back.

Indiana scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but the Buckeyes still lead it 9-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Hoosiers led off the inning by reaching base on a Tyler Engle error, and then followed that up with an Alex Dickerson single. Buckeye reliever Dean Wolosianski then got a strikeout before giving up another single to load the bases.

A second strikeout immediately following that single gave the Hoosiers two outs. A triple to right field by T.C. Knipp brought all three runners home, and a single by Michael Basil then brought Knipp home for the 10-9 win.

Wetzel led the Buckeyes on offense, going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs.

Buckeye starter Greg Greve went 4.0 innings and gave up five hits and only two earned runs. The Ohio State bullpen went 4.2 innings and gave up 11 hits and eight runs--only three were earned.
